  Ashi's Apostasy----Part 1

  i'm rather long-winded, as well pretentious sounding, but i had to break this tale into two parts in order to tell it....people would get bored otherwise.

  (sorry for the blatent rip-off, amazing).

  for those of you who don't know, i'm a raised jw, yet not born into it.

  I was on private reproof once too but they didn't stop me from going out in service. You were lucky

  LOL! I was on reproof too, twice actually (the second one came as a surprise because I was expecting swift disfellowshipment). I also had to go out in service; actually, they expected me to be active in service as a "proof" that I was really repented. During the second judicial hearing they told me they hadn't lifted the restrictions yet because I wasn't doing enough, though I was putting in like 15 hours a month, despite being busy attending college and everything. THAT was the red flag for me, that made me see how little concern they had for other people's feelings. I never went out to service again, became irregular soon afterwards and eventually faded away. On the rare ocasions that I see one of these elders in the streets I can notice that "we-should-have-DF-you-when-we-could" expression in their eyes that I find very funny.

  The Watchtower's Bible Scholars?

  witnesses are often told that is is not necessary to look to outside sources such as bible encyclopedias and commentaries because the society's writing department already has these and presents us with the best comments from them for us anyway.

  what i have noticed though, is that there are many comments from 19th century commentators and not much in the way of quotes from modern-day bible scholars and their works.. i understand that at the recent kingdom ministry school it was said that the society has the best bible scholars available for our instuction.

  if that was said (can anyone confirm?

  there are many comments from 19th century commentators and not much in the way of quotes from modern-day Bible scholars and their works.

  Of course not, for two reasons:

  1. The WTS appointed itself as God's exclusive channel of Biblical interpretation, so it'd be contradictory if they considered other sources as authoritative. The boys in writing might contradict themselves in other respects, but they will never grant any authority whatsoever to modern mainstream scholars.

  2. Virtually no one today, except the most fundamentalists exegets (which I wouldn't call scholars) believe such things as: literallity of most accounts in Genesis, book of Daniel not being written during the Macabean period, the four gospels being based on first-hand accounts, miracles, Revelation as a profetic book, etc, etc, etc.

  Witnesses have no idea what modern biblical studies are about. They are the perfect example of the sad combination of arrogance and ignorance.

  ive been visiting this site for about 8 months, just taking in all your comments and the issues that are of importance to those who have been jehovahs witnesses and the problems that you have identified with the religion.

  i was brought up in the truth in the 60s and 70s but my parents left before i reached the age when i would consider being baptised.

  subsequently my parents divorced but have remarried separately and are both back in the religion.

Aren't there enough Protestant churches and Biblical interpretations already? Why can't you just choose one and stay there?

  Such a thing is truly detestable in Jehovah’s eyes and it is absolute treachery on the part of those anointed ones in positions of responsibility to compromise the organization in that way and bring community guilt upon all of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

  Now, how can you say that and call us apostates? Go show this post to one of the elders in your congregation and see if they won't call you an apostate.

  BTW, you're outdoing the Writing Department in contradicting yourself in every sentence you write. If Jeho-bah rejected the churches of Christendom as you say, why would he not reject the WTS as well instead of refining it?

  No hope for understanding the universe?

  is there no hope for truly understanding the universe?.

  if a person believes that we were created by a supreme being who is in control of and fully understands the universe, he may reason that we were created with the ability to also understand the universe.. but if we are not created and have just evolved as part of a natural prosses why should we asume that our brain should have any grasp on a true understanding of things.. how can we know that our brains just are not in tune or cannot grasp any of the fundementaly important concepts that case this universe to exist?.

  maybe in trying to understand the universe we are just tying ourselves up in knot trying to know the unknowable?

  The brain and the human mind are products of millions of years of natural selection and are adapted to the environment we live in. Suppose that a primitive antropoid sees two lions getting into his cave but only one getting out, what would he conclude? Well, you bet that those who couldn't figure there was a lion still inside are not among our ancestors. That's how our innate sense of arithmetics evolved. The problem is, our senses are only adapted to our environment (ie: macroscopic phenomena on Earth). We can still understand very well certain phenomena in the Universe; even Relativity is understandable, although counter-intuitive. Quantum mechanics, on the other hand, is just sets of equations on paper; it's comprehensible but not understandable. Most likely, there are things in the Universe that cannot even be mathematicized and thus will always be beyond our capabilities of abstraction and comprehension.

  Actually, my statement is based on only one assumption: that all thaught processes take place in the brain. Most people will agree with that, except those who were taught until not too long ago that the literal heart was the source of human feelings - guess whom?

  I do admit, though, that neuroscience has only a very faint idea of how the brain actually works, and what conscience really is (if it really is something at all).

  It turns out that I'm just reading a very interesting book on the topic (which also deals with the problem of vision you ask for): "How the mind works" by Steven Pinker. Highly recommendable.

Her heavenly appointment was somewhat similar to Paul's: she landed on her head while riding a horse, in 1970. Last week they were expecting UFOs to take them to Heaven, but again they didn't show up.

  Darling, do you think you're going to impress me with your gibberish? You have no idea what you're talking about. Quantum-level phenomena affects the functioning of neurons as much as an atomic explosion on Earth affects the orbit of Jupiter.

  Erich: Ich spreche nur ein bischen Deutsch. I do live in Switzerland but I'm originally from Argentina. And you're right that neurons could be replaced by any other material (such as a silicon chip) and you wouldn't notice it as long as it performs exactly the same functions as the good old neurons.
